Five handy moving tips
Organizing a move is a lot of work. Trust me, last month I found out I had to move within the span of a month, and it was no picnic. If you’re moving the best thing to have is time, not move on the spur of the moment like I just did. That said, no matter what your time frame is, there are ways to make your move a little smoother. Following are five ideas…
Size it right: If you’re paying someone to move your boxes, pack large boxes, because they’ll be faster to unpack than 100s of small boxes. If you’re lifting yourself, pack small to mid-sized boxes to save your back.
Use tape sparingly: Tape is annoying and can end up costing a lot, if you go through rolls and rolls. Only tape necessary boxes. For example, a box full of books doesn’t need tape, just slide the box lids under each other. When you do use tape, place a piece of string under the tape (leave a little hanging out). While unpacking, you won’t need to look for a razor, just pull the string to cut the tape. This also saves your stuff from being cut accidentally.
Make a few unpack first boxes: Pack a few boxes with necessities - toilet paper, some cleaning supplies, a few toys, a map of your new area, the coffeepot, a few mugs, a shower curtain, some towels, and hand soap; stuff you’ll need right away. Make sure these boxes are in your car or at the front of the moving truck, so you’ll unpack them first.
Use towels to pack breakables: This saves on packing material and you’d have to pack your linens anyhow.
Don’t un-hang your closet: Use tape, or large twist ties to bind a bunch of hangers together. You can either pull a garbage bag or Space Bag up over your clothing, or fold clothes, hangers and all into a box, which saves you having to re-hang everything.
Of course this is just a start. Many things can make your move easier. Because moving is fresh in my mind, we’ll be looking at more tips soon. For now, why not offer your best moving tip?

@Lisa Thanks - I’ve moved about six times in the last 7 years and I was getting tired of slicing my stuff through boxes :)
