Laundry totes for when you have flights of stairs to deal with
Wow - how about that title? Long, no?
My laundry nightmare carrying story:
When I was maybe twenty-two or so I lived in a pretty tall apartment building. I can’t remember how tall, (memory failure), but I lived pretty high up. The laundry room was in the basement. It was spooky and dark and had this door leading outside. It was smack in the middle of downtown Portland, OR, so there are plenty of folks you don’t want coming into your spooky dark laundry room, yet idiot residents would leave that door open. Also, the elevator would break down, in the summer! So flights of stairs it was. Sucks to be you when that happens.
In the last few years my only major goal when moving as been a washer and dryer in house. I hate carrying laundry all over the place, and dealing with having change on hand, and messing with other people’s clothing. It’s not a good time. If it’s up to you, have a washer and dryer in your house.
If it’s not up to you, and you do need to carry laundry all over, or you’re headed to a college dorm in the fall, here are some bag options that will help:

Square Graphic Crunch Can by Umbra

White 3-Compartment Hamper Tote

Red Stripe Crunch Can by Umbra

All of the above and plenty of other laundry tote ideas are available at The Container Store.
For kicks, why not tell me the worst laundry carrying story you have.

seriously, the cheap reusable grocery store bags. Especially the ones at Target that sell out quick and fold up into a little snapped pocket - they unfold huge. Those don’t hold groceries I buy those for my clothes.
That, and if you don’t have stairs… but maybe have to walk a bit to do the laundry… STROLLERS! are wonderful. Especially the big ones.

When I was 16, my parents divorced and I lived with my mom in a duplex apartment. There was a business underneath and we lived upstairs, not many stairs, 19 to be exact. My mom and I used to share laundry duty, but the worst was when it was my week, I had to drag 2 big black garbage bags of laundry down a block and across the main road to the laundromat…my mom didn’t mind when I bought soap there (expensive but easier on the arms) and then I had to fold everything and put them back in the bags and drag them back home…sometimes I’d get a ride from my dad or sister. The worst part is when we were moving out (2 years later), the lady who worked below us asked why we were carrying dirty laundry and why didn’t we use the washer and dryer in the basement? Turns out the landlord neglected to tell us we were allowed to use them and give us the security code for the alarm system.

Navi - strollers are good, if you have a kid. Whenever I didn’t have a washer in the house, I was kidless.
Jakesmom - Ha, that is a bad story, or a good bad story I suppose. I used to have to lug laundry to my boyfriend’s mom’s house - but that was way back in the day. We’d take the bus, but always go together so it was a little less work.
