"Where is the Tape!?" - A Little Rant

by Julie on February 12th, 2008

CropperCapture[258] Please pardon my little rant this morning, but I have to tell you…I am SO tired of my tape, scissors, markers, pens and pencils disappearing into the abyss. Does this ever happen at your house?

I have certain places where I store these things and they always end up playing a disappearing act. Who takes them? Do we have little mice who need these items from wrapping presents or something?

No, it’s my sweet children who keep taking them and then don’t put them back where they belong. I don’t mind them using these things, but it’s frustrating when I do need them and can’t find them. The last thing I have time for is hunting around the house looking for something.

Let me give you an example: I needed the tape the other day. Yesterday was my little boy’s birthday, and I needed to wrap a few things. I usually keep tape with all my wrapping paper supplies, but I was out. So, I went to the next place I keep tape and that’s the craft drawer. But guess what? It wasn’t there! Argh. I knew exactly who to ask though. My ten year old daughter.

She and her brothers made this massive card board club house out in the playroom and they used the tape. Somehow the tape had disappeared into thin air. We were looking everywhere! You’ll never guess where we finally found it. In the linen closet. Yes, the linen closet.

You see, at the bottom of our linen closet, my kids love to turn it into a tiny clubhouse. I don’t mind. I only store blankets down there. Well, my daughter had been in there earlier “decorating” the little clubhouse and taping papers she had made on the walls. When she was done, she didn’t put the tape back, but instead threw all the blankets back on top of the tape, hiding it very well.

Thankfully we found it and I was able to continue my wrapping.

What’s the moral of this story? I have no idea, but I do know that I am going to make me a mom box that no one is aloud to touch. It will contain my most prized possessions like my tape, my special scissors, markers and anything else like that. I may even find a little box I can lock. Now that would be nice.

I’ll be sure and take pictures of my box for you when I’m all done. I will never again go searching high and low for the tape! :D

Welcome to my life!! I could have written this, only I don’t have a linen closet big enough for my kids to play in (I’m jealous). I FEEL YOUR PAIN. May I suggest a heavy duty tool or tackle box with a lock for storing your treasures? I understand all can be replaced for pennies, but are priceless when you need them and they are no where to be found.

Happens every time I need to wrap a present, and I’m usually trying to wrap it minutes before we’re heading out the door. My son loves to create things, but he never puts the stuff he uses to create with back where he found it.

How hysterical - I thought it was only at my house. I tried getting my own set of everything, but they wander off, too. A locked box for them… That is a brilliant idea! Hope you don’t mind if I borrow it (I promise to put it back…).

YES! Yes!! That is my life too! I’ve become the strange woman who walks around the house muttering to herself about the latest thing that’s gone missing….from rolls of toilet paper to tape to markers to my makeup to a whole chicken (don’t ask!) NOTHING stays where it’s supposed to in this house. Any suggestions?!

oh I live this daily, whether it is: the tape, scissors, toothbrush (don’t ask how those walk), remotes, pencils, pens, etc. Akkk. I swear I need to velcro these to the wall but then the velcro would disappear.

Thank goodness it isn’t just my house! I started keeping the tape on a string, and people can only use in while it is attached. It works for far. There have been a couple time we have had to un-attach it, but it always comes back…Mama means business!!
