Video - How to Organize Your Book Collection

CropperCapture[123] Do you have a ton of books? My husband and I both love to read and we have quite the book collection.

A few months ago we finally weeded through all of our books from school and got rid of a lot of them that we knew we would never need again.

If you have a lot of books, you probably easily forget what you have and what you don’t have. By putting together a simple organizational system for your books, you can always know what’s there.

Here’s a great video that gives you some tips on organizing your book collection.

    My collection of books has fluctuated over the years from over 10,000 volumes to my current amount of about 1,000 (moving 5 times in as many years forces you to learn the value of purging!).

    I’ve tried all sorts of applications to sort and categorize them, and different configurations on my bookshelves to find them. I’ve finally, finally, finally come up with a system that works.

    In terms of application, Book Collector (for OSX) is unbeatable. I was able to computerize my 99% of my collection by simply entering the ISBN. Now, I know what I have.

    For the bookshelves, I came up with a system that is brilliant in its simplicity (if I do say so myself *g*). I sort books into two piles: paperback size or oversize. Then, I alphabetize by… title. No more sorting fiction or non-fiction, and then sub-dividing the non-fiction. I can now find anything I want without having to pull up Book Collector to find out the author of some obscure book I only pull out once a year.

    I don’t want to think about what I’m going to do when I move away from my apartment with built-in bookcases!

    PaperBackSwap can be great, but for each book you get rid of, you have a credit for another book. Not sure it helps with clutter!

    interesting concept.
    I always do mine by genre.
    Never thought to make a spread sheet of the books we own. Might be a new project. hee hee
